“My grandfather, Albert Ketah Sr., was the son of a highly accomplished totem carver. I didnʼt know him well, yet I do know that he did some carving. I have wondered what his life was like as his generation was deeply affected by the colonization of Alaska and residential schools. I remember him as a stoic man with a quiet strength. In the Tlingit way, individuals are part of one of two moieties, Raven or Eagle. He was a Raven, as am I. I relate to how I remember him through valuing strength of spirit, simplicity, and steadiness.”
